Carl
Sonny Leyland
I have a special
attachment to this CD of Carl's. It was the first recording I had
ever purchased for the purpose of hearing some realboogie woogie
solo piano. What a thrill. I'd been waiting 40 years for this! I
had to special order it and it took a few weeks, but I was not disappointed
in the least.
Having had nothing
to compare this great recording to, I listened and read the liner
notes over and over. Who were all these guys he's talking about
in his notes? Hershal Thomas, Yancey, Freddy Slack, Albert Ammons,
and on and on. My world was about to change.
Carl is entertaining,
innovative, and accurate. There didn't seem to be any real down
spots in this recording. Though his voice is not refined, it compliments
his keyboard work and shows that he's just gotta sing. It is a medium
tempo CD with most cuts nice and tasty.
The intro groove
on "House of Blue Lights" are my favorite moments on the
recording, a sample of which is below..
Liner notes
say he has been playing blues and boogie about 16 years. To accomplish
this kind of mastery in that short amount of time should mean we'll
have some great listening "Down the road Apiece".
Though I didn't
hear enough straight ahead driving boogie woogie on this "Boogie
and blues" CD, I was ready for the next one (and went and found,
"They Call Me The Boogie Woogie Man").
